For disinfection of pool water, a natural process is used. Only salt and an electric current are required: The device uses direct current to split the salt (NaCl) dissolved in the water and to release chlorine: NaCl is split into Na and Cl.

The resulting molecular chlorine Cl2, which destroys microorganisms and dyes and has a disinfecting effect. After the disinfection, Na again combines with Cl to form salt.
