The pool expansion float absorbs the pressure of the ice expansion and thus prevents damage to the pool.
The floats are joined and positioned in the pool to the desired length to best divide the pool surface area and absorb ice expansion.
The individual pieces are joined in a row behind each other to divide the pool in half (one diagonal) or in a cross to divide the pool in quarters.

The float is partially filled with completely harmless sand, you may find that the float bubbles a little when it is filled. This is quite normal, it is not a fault of the float.

Calculation: 
E.g. a 3.5 x 7m rectangle pool, this works out to 7.82m, i.e. 15x the 0.5m float.
